Wouldn’t you just love to pedal your bike peacefully alongside a burbling river, surrounded by great vistas of mountains, waterfalls and glaciers — and not have to worry about cars?

Our first guests of the 2016 season had an incredible time biking the Going-to-the-Sun Road from Avalanche to The Loop a few weeks ago. Although this was not their first time in Glacier National Park, it was the first time they’d ever experienced this special time of year when the Sun Road is partially closed to vehicles while still being open to hikers and bikers, and they couldn’t stop raving about it! Check out some of the incredible photos they took below.

Currently, the west side of Going-to-the-Sun is closed to vehicles at Avalanche, but hikers and bikers can access as far as Bird Woman Falls Overlook while the plowing crews are working and may continue past the Overlook once the plows are done for the day. Just remember to bring layers, bear spray, plenty of water, snacks and your common sense – the Park Service recommends that you “exercise caution and be prepared for wintery conditions, including avalanche danger heading past Bird Woman Falls Overlook”. (For more information on hiker/biker access and the newly launched bike shuttle pilot program, please visit the conditions page of the official Glacier National Park website.)

If you’re planning a visit to Glacier National Park, we highly recommend you bookmark the GNP Current Road Status tool. Conditions here in the mountains can change quickly, but since Park Service updates the map in realtime, you’ll always be up to date! You can also get Detailed Trail Status and Maintenance Reports here – just scroll down to find the list of areas in the park.

We still have two weeks available in June during which access to Going-to-the-Sun road will be largely limited to hikers and bikers, so if you’re interested in exploring our mountains without the buzz of cars, book your perfect vacation now!
