When you live inside of the boundaries of a National Park, it’s bound to be different from living in a rural community. Recently we had a visitor stop by who reminded us just how wild the wilderness of Montana really is.

This photo was taken from the deck of our new home, Glacier Bear Retreat. Our interior finish contractor, Matt, had just stepped out to the deck to cut a piece of wood for the interior trim. He noticed the big cat in the woods and immediately called for me to bring my dog, Koda, into the house. I ran to get Koda- and then grabbed my camera. I was so lucky to be in the right place at the right time to get a shot like this! (Thank you Matt!)

After I took a few photos the lion left, walking deeper into the woods. I think he was as curious about me as I was about him. This was the first time I’ve ever seen a lion in the wilds of Montana, and I was surprised by his size, strength and absolute beauty.

It’s nice to see these magnificent animals in their natural environs, and to remember that we’re not at the top of the food chain.
